Tendras Que Ser Une Gran Varon

My practice implements the artistic methodology of decreation, using the ashes as pigment for oil paint. My most recent work combines this technique with canvases I fabricated using Salvadorian textiles.

The imagery dissects themes of family dynamics in relation to my identity and has translucent elements to allow the textiles to come through, allowing their vibrancy to contrast the somber monochromatic palette of the ash.

When it comes to creating the oil pigment used in my previous paintings, the symbolism is held in the object burned to create the ashes. However, for this series, I used ashes from a night the family gathered around the fire.

I wanted to reflect on familial ties and their reformation throughout my life in this body of work, rather than the place of turmoil and protest that the ashes came from in my earlier works.

I implemented the Latin American textiles to symbolize the role of culture in these dynamics, opting to use the mass-produced versions of these textiles as a representation of my identity. Much like my status as a Hispanic man, the authenticity of these textiles is often questioned and found undesirable.
